What is an archway?

An archway is traditionally a large arch or frame constructed from either metal or wood, forming the 'skeleton'. This can then be decorated with fabric, flags, and flowers and is often placed in front of a door or entrance to either the bridal couple's home or where the wedding reception is held. It not only guides guests to the party but also serves as a colourful marker of the big day. The archway is festive, it's a lifelong memory, and for family, friends, and neighbours, erecting the archway is a wonderful occasion to gather. It's not uncommon to have a sign made for the archway, which can, for example, feature the bridal couple's names and wedding date.

Sign for archway on wedding day

The big day when love is cemented and marked, and the knot is tied between two people who want to spend the rest of their lives together. The wedding day is full of traditions that must be honoured – everything from the white dress and throwing the bridal bouquet to the bridal waltz and cutting the groom's socks. Finally, it's also quite normal to have a floral arch, and an extra touch can be to personalize a sign for the archway. Such an archway sign can incorporate a heart cutout or, for example, the text 'congratulations'.

Half copper wedding sign for archway

The archway is one of our beautiful customs in Denmark, and in fact, the tradition has evolved over the years. Previously, archways were only erected for weddings, silver and golden anniversaries, and other "big" wedding anniversaries. However, during the 20th century, it also became common in many places to mark the 12 and a half year wedding anniversary – the copper wedding – with a half archway. For this occasion, we can therefore also provide a half sign for the archway, so the theme is carried through. This is by no means a necessity for the tradition, and many couples also choose the classic full copper wedding sign for the archway, for example in the shape of a heart.

Silver wedding sign for archway

The 25th wedding anniversary is a huge day where a bridal couple can celebrate being together for a quarter of a century. How this big day is celebrated varies greatly, but just like with a copper wedding, it is not uncommon for family and friends to visit throughout the day. Likewise, the bridal couple is traditionally woken up with breakfast and singing – and then, of course, the archway. There are no special rules or traditions for what a silver wedding sign for the archway should look like, but many have the dates and years for both the wedding and the anniversary, as well as "25 years", written on the sign.

Sign for golden wedding archway

The golden wedding is a celebration of 50 years of marriage. Some couples choose to replace the typical morning wake-up with a bigger party. Where there may have been opportunities for music, singing, and family visits, a more extraordinary celebration can be held. An archway for the golden wedding is also a given, but can instead be placed at the entrance to the couple's home or party venue. It is not uncommon for an archway sign for a golden wedding to also feature "50 years" prominently, as it is a huge milestone to highlight.

Diamond and Iron Wedding Sign for Archway

Diamond and iron weddings are both rare events, as they require the married couple to have wed at a relatively young age and both to live for many years – and, of course, still be together. These refer to 60 years of marriage for the diamond wedding and 70 years for the iron wedding, respectively. If you know a couple approaching this day, it naturally calls for extra celebration, and an archway sign is an essential element.

Which wedding anniversaries are celebrated varies greatly from family to family. The most traditional approach is to mark the round anniversaries with an archway and celebration, but some also do it every five years. Other big days where an archway sign would be a nice touch

The custom-designed archway sign is made of 5mm birch veneer with texture, and we engrave with a light, elegant shade and a beautiful font that suits the beautiful occasion. A lovely finish will also be added in the form of a dark burnt cutting edge. The thickness of your archway sign makes it easy to work with and mount. The size can vary from sign to sign, but the dimensions can be found under the individual product.

There are no requirements for what or how much should be on your archway sign, so it's more about special traditions and preferences that you need to consider. We also have selected models where you can have simple motifs engraved, such as laurel wreaths or hearts. In addition, some designs have other differences that you can choose from – for example, you can get archway signs with and without an engraved frame and with varying fonts. If your intention is for your archway sign to also serve as a gift, it's a good idea to include the date, occasion, and the name of the person or people being celebrated.
